Children of Immaculate Conception Church in Forest City and St. Mary, Help of Christians Church in Shelby dressed up as saints last week to commemorate All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1. St. Ann Parish and the Charlotte Latin Mass Community marked All Souls’ Day with a Solemn High Latin Mass Nov. 2.

Vested in black as a reminder of judgment, sin and to pray for the deceased in purgatory, St. Ann’s pastor, Father Timothy Reid offered the solemn Mass and was assisted by Deacons Peter Tonon and Tim Mueller.

The next day, parishioners visited Belmont Abbey Cemetery and prayed for the faithful departed.

MINT HILL — St. Luke Church invited the Mint Hill community to Trunk-or-Treat on Oct. 26. Impressive trunks included games such as a life-size Operation game, a saint match-up, throw the halo around Mary, a mini-golf hole, and nerf gun target game.

120619 BernatchezDeacon SergeCHARLOTTE — Bishop Peter Jugis announces the appointment of Deacon Serge Bernatchez to serve Our Lady of Mercy Parish and Our Lady of Fatima mission chapel in Winston-Salem, effective Nov. 1.

Deacon Bernatchez was born in Ontario to French Catholic parents and comes to the Diocese of Charlotte from New Jersey, where he and his wife Marilyn were married in 1995 and where he was ordained a permanent deacon in 2007.

Since ordination he has served for 12 years at Sacred Heart Church in South Amboy, N.J. At the parish his main focus was in a catechetical function as an RCIA director and a teacher of confirmation preparation classes. In addition, with the help of parishioners, Deacon Bernatchez started an adult faith formation program and a youth ministry program.

Driven by a sense of service to the Church, Deacon Serge said he is looking forward to working with the pastor, deacons and parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy Parish and Our Lady of Fatima mission chapel.
